What is laparoscopic gallbladder surgery?

Laparoscopic gallbladder surgery is the best method of treating gallstones. This procedure removes the gallbladder and gallstones through several small incisions within the abdomen.

How is this procedure performed?

The surgeon will make several small incisions, then insert a camera and small tools into the abdomen using three to four small incisions. Each incision ranges from ¼ to ½ an inch as opposed to an open surgery which will vary with a single incision 6 to 12 inches long.  The surgeon then inflates your abdomen with air or carbon dioxide in order to see clearly. Inserting a lighted scope attached to a small video camera, the surgeons will insert the laparoscope near the belly button.
